Ayo Codrington became interested in opera as a career at the age of
twelve. She graduated from Houston, Texas' High School for the
Performing and Visual Arts in May of 2003. At HSPVA she further
developed her voice and learned more about music. In June of 1998 - 2001
Ayo received a full scholarship to the Houston Grand Opera Camp Bel
Canto. In May of 2000 she participated in the NAACP ACT-SO Local Vocal
Contemporary and Classical Competitions, respectively. She received a
Silver Medal in the Vocal Classical category. In April of 2001 she won
1st place in Sophomore Girls Division in the National Association for
Teachers of Singing Houston Competition. In May of 2001 Ayo received a
Bronze Medal in the NAACP ACT-SO Local Vocal Classical Competition. In
July of 2001 she was one of the two Texans chosen to attend the Florida
State University Honors Vocal Solo Camp. In September of 2001 Ayo sang
at Rice University Shepherd School of Music. In December of 2001 she was
chosen to attend The Juilliard Experience Winter Sleep-over. In May of
2002 she received a Gold Medal in the NAACP ACT-SO Local Vocal Classical
Competition. That July Ayo participated in the NAACP ACT-SO National
Vocal Classical Competition and she was one of the six students from
Texas chosen to attend Boston University Tanglewood Institute's Young
Artist Vocal Program. In November of 2002 she participated in the
National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts Arts Recognition and
Talent Search Competition (NFAA ARTS) and received a Merit Award in
Classical Voice. In January of 2003 Ayo participated in the Houston
Young Artists Competition and was chosen to perform in a recital at Rice
University. She is currently recording her album titled Ascendant.
